Born and raised up in Lusatia/GDR. After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer worked in a theatre and cultural event venue. 1987-93 studies of cultural anthropology, literature and ethnology in Leipzig, 1999 PhD in European ethnology at Humboldt University Berlin.
Has worked for film festivals in several positions since 1991, many years for DOK Leipzig, till 2017 head of film programme there. At Cottbus FilmFestival head of the German-Sorbian section „Homeland | Domownja | Domizna“.
Curated numerous film programmes, e.G. for DOK Leipzig, Acadamy of Arts Berlin, goEast Festival for Central and Eastern European Film Wiesbaden and Goethe Institut around the world. Had teaching assignments at universities and institutes, mentor and tutor in training initiatives. Author and dramaturg for documentaries and documentary serials. Published on documentary.
2019 director of the feature-length documentary „Coal-Country Song. Gundermann“ (Grimme Award nomination, several festivals, theatrical release) und author oft he book „Unter hohen Himmeln. Das Universum Volker Koepp“ (Bertz + Fischer Verlag). Co-author of the children’s documentary „Lene and the spirits oft he forest“ (director: Dieter Schumann, 2020).
2021 publication of the documentary novel „Children of Hoy. Freedom, happiness and terror“ (Suhrkamp Verlag).
Two sons, lives in Berlin and temporarily Hoyerswerda.
